Steve Quillian Upstairs Wood Casement Windows with Antique Glass

Just a little update from Steve Quillian concerning the historic wood casement windows I began to post about December 18. Close to completion, we have to pull off a couple of days to let the floor guys in.

Dennis Prieur owns a custom wood flooring business that he calls, "Through the Woods" and it's his company doing the floors in this little room, formerly a sleeping porch. He and his wife Suzanne are interested in the rich history surrounding older neighborhoods such as my own Seminole Heights, where this bungalow happens to be. Suzanne so much so that she's spearheading an historical documentary on the neighborhood.

Scott (pictured) and I left around five today having some hardware to complete, but it gets dark early not to mention that we have family in town that's leaving in the morning. Normally we might have stuck it out, but Christmas season is anything but normal.

One thing about my casement windows is that although they are built with traditional methods, I use a modern weatherstripping system so that they seal like miniature entry doors. The weatherstripping is replaceable should it ever wear out. You need only pop the old one out and pop a new one in - and it's all available at Home Depot.

Cypress is my wood of choice. Working it has some quirks but it's longevity due to its natural insect and weather resistance make it a desirable material to expose to the elements. The price isn't out of reach either, being a little more than pine (at least where I live).

Did I mention that these windows also come with fitted screens? They're hinged on the inside to easily access the windows. So the owners can still have a screened porch if they like - whenever they like.

We have to install the hardware and trim the outsides before we're done - sometime next week.
