Spent most of the day at Eric Krause's house prepping the upstairs to receive a few sets of casement windows. Sparks was with me learning how to cut siding and other such wood products. Steve Brown took the way of the highway this morning after he decided it was 100 miles round trip was wearing on him. Yes, he came all the way from Auburndale by Lakeland mainly because he loves to work on these older homes. I can understand. I only have to drive a mile. Sometimes I don't have to fill up with gas for two weeks. Steve was probably filling up every few days.
There's plenty of work to go around though for a quality minded and qualified indivudual.
Just what does it take to work for me? Well, a full fledged carpenter should be just that. And if he's not, he's got to be willing to learn. Oh, and he doesn't have to be a he either. The person should know their stuff, have tools and have a ride. If you don't know your stuff, but have tools and a ride, you should at least be willing to admit you don't know.
I remember what an old boss told me one time, having interviewed and tried out many people. He said that people would come in claiming all kinds of experience - "I have 10 years/ 20 years" or whatever. In the end, it was more like they had 1 year of experience 10 or 20 times.
Basically, I don't care if you can talk. I care if you can cut wood straight. I care if you have finesse. Gorillas need not apply.
