Shelley, Kaeden and myself are in Texas this week visiting friends and family. Everyone needs a break once in a while don't you think? Some breaks are better timed than others, and this one seems to be right on time.
A few months ago we drove up to Ohio to visit Shelley's dad for Christmas and even though it was the holiday season, I felt as though it wasn't the best time to take off, busy as I was. You never can tell though. Even though we took off when I didn't feel the timing was in order, we're still alive and the mortgage is paid.
Perhaps one difference this time is the addition of Sparks, my right hand man, who has helped in so many ways to help me weed through a backlog of work. Even while we're gone, Sparks is doing things to keep the business fit and trim. The truck is in the shop and he's doing inventory on all the equipment.
The good Lord has blessed our business, Quillian Craftsman, LLC, considerably in the past year or so, allowing us strictly by word of mouth to become a household name to a large population. Growth isn't without its headaches though. I've hired and fired four or five people, had to say no to several people on certain projects, and, among other things, found out a new way that I am taxed/penalized for having a business.
I bought a business license from Hillsborough County to make cabinets. I guess that's why they sent me a bunch of forms to fill out asking me what kinds of tools I have, how many and how much they are worth - so they can tax me on them. $25 for every thousand dollars worth of tools that the business owns.
Not only did the county suprise me with that, the paperwork they sent me arrived a week before the due date. I was like, "how in the world am I supposed to service my clients, and do an inventory, and fill out this paperwork, and get it in to them by their deadline, in a (excuse my language) friggin' week? I mean, give me a little advance notice, eh? Many of my customers wait up to three months for Quillian Craftsman, LLC, to work on their homes.
Sorry, but the tax people had to wait a couple of weeks. So that's what Sparks is doing while I am gone and the truck is in the shop. Inventory. Granted, it's not a bad thing to be doing, but I would rather do it for my own personal purposes instead of do it so I could pay more money to the government.
We'll be back in a couple of days and I'll go back to work. But until then, we're relaxing the best we can so we can push forward with our work full steam ahead when we get back.
